COMPUTER CURTAIN, 2023. Curtain woven with paper files.
After deleting something on the computer, the user must then delete it from the trash bin so the file is not still easily accessible to others. Over many months I visited the computers at the Hampshire College library and collected files that had been left in the computer trash bin. These included personal essays, copies of ID’s, bus tickets, presentations, resumes, meeting notes and more. I printed the files, manipulated, and shredded them in ways as to obscure and censor the contents, then weaved with them to form a window curtain. Each time I completed the journey to the computer trash bins, I wore a suit of leather and bones, replying to questions with only “I’m on duty” and “I’ve come to take what has been left behind.”
